SCHOLAR LECTURE SERIES
GREGORY DEMPSTER, MFA

Gay Marriage and the Return of the Republic of Solon: Gender, Sexuality, Violence, and the Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage.

The increasing acceptance of GLBTQ relationships in the Western World marks a cultural sea change in the perception of gender and sexuality. Does it also signal a return to the ideals of Classical and Ancient Greece, as Ramtha predicted? This lecture will cover topics including Classical Greek democracy and its unique concept of personal liberty; The accepted heterosexual/homosexual relationships common to the Classical era; The ascendance of Christianity and the suppression of women and GLBTQ; What Modern Science says about gender and sexuality; The emerging Transgender Wave; The Christian Fundamentalist conspiracy to suppress the GLBTQ civil rights movement (and how it backfired), and what we can look forward to in the future.

Greg Dempster, B. Mus., MFA, SR, Began his work as a grass-roots activist in the gay civil rights movement in 1981 when he was elected to the inaugural board of directors of Laguna Outreach, one of the first non-profit social service organizations to work specifically with lesbians, gays and at-risk youth.

His organization was directly involved in political and social action against the leading anti-gay political campaigns of the day, including Proposition 64, the so-called Lyndon LaRouche Initiative, Proposition 6, and other legislation promoted by conservative politicians William Dannemeyer, John Briggs, Bob Dornan, and others.

Mr. Dempster is also an expert in rehabilitating injuries of the upper extremities in musicians, a specialty he combines with consulting work in the fields of industrial safety, human factors research and ergonomics. Mr. Dempster's major clients include large private employers, service unions, and municipal and state government agencies in the Western United States. He has published widely about his clinical and research work on the subject.

As a pianist, Mr. Dempster has made many notable concert appearances as soloist, chamber partner and vocal accompanist on stages on the West Coast and in France. He has given numerous lectures, presentations and workshops to music teachers’groups and associations on the West Coast, and works privately with injured musicians throughout the United States.

Mr. Dempster was a Regents’Fellow and teaching assistant at the University of California, Irvine, where he received both the Bachelor's of Music and Master of Fine Arts degrees in piano performance. Mr. Dempster also did post-graduate studies in Paris, France with the celebrated American pianist Noël Lee. He is formerly a teaching assistant at the Taubman Institute in New York.
