André Cyr “Birdman” Honored for His Extensive Contribution to Bird Zoology
André Cyr, longtime RSE student from Canada, was recently awarded the “Charles-Eusèbe Dionne 2008” prize for his outstanding contribution to the ornithology of the province of Quebec throughout his long career. This prize was set up in 1906 to honor the first person to publish a major book in French on the birds of this province. André Cyr was also honored as leader of the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He received this honor for his extensive contribution to the field of ornithology through numerous talks and conferences all over the world, publications of photographic books, journals, and scientific articles on birds. He collaborated in the publishing of the “Seasonal Atlas of the Birds of Quebec” and the French translation of the “Peterson Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern North America,” arguably the bird bible. He has also taken part in a television series for eleven years, created bird clubs, and taught ornithology and ecology at the university level. The list goes on. He is well known for his extraordinary realistic bird imitations, for which he received the popular nickname of Birdman and was honored by Ramtha at an RSE event.

RSE Student Recognized for Her Talent As a Soprano
RSE student and distinguished soprano, Katherine Soroka was the winner of the 2005 Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions. Katherine Soroka’s performances with the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival were acclaimed as “masterful” singing and “heartfelt vocalism.” She was chosen to perform a concert for the Frick Museum’s Music For Exhibitions on November 18, 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has many more appearances scheduled for this year.
